Invoice vs. receipt: what's the difference?

By Marissa · Founder of Dunn · Freelancer for 15+ years · Updated October 18, 2026

They look similar, but they do opposite jobs.

Short answer: an invoice is sent before payment to ask for money. A receipt is sent after payment to confirm it was received.

When you only need a receipt

If the customer pays on the spot, like at a shop counter or right after a haircut, there's nothing to ask for. A receipt is enough.

When you need both

When the customer pays later (after a cleaning, a repair, a project), send an invoice to ask, then a receipt once the money arrives. The invoice gets you paid, and the receipt gives your customer proof for their records or taxes.

Can one document do both?

Sometimes. An invoice marked "Paid" with the payment date and method can work as a receipt. A separate receipt is clearer.

How Dunn helps

Dunn handles both halves. It sends the invoice in your name with a pay button for card or bank, and reminds your customer until it's paid. When they pay through Stripe, the invoice is marked paid in Dunn, and Stripe emails your customer a payment receipt. You never make a receipt by hand.

Quick answers

Can an invoice be a receipt?
A paid invoice marked 'Paid' often works as a receipt, but a separate receipt is clearer.

Is a quote the same as an invoice?
No. A quote is an estimate before the work. An invoice asks for payment after.

Do I need to keep copies?
Yes, keep both for your taxes.

Does Dunn send receipts?
When a customer pays through Stripe, they get a payment receipt by email, and the invoice is marked paid in Dunn.
