How to ask for payment in an email (without feeling awkward)

Asking for money feels awkward for almost everyone. It shouldn't. You did the work. Being clear is a kindness to both of you.
When sending the invoice
Hi [name], thanks again for having me do [the job]. Here's invoice #[number] for $[amount], due [date]. You can pay by card or bank here: [link]. Let me know if you have any questions!
A few days before it's due
Hi [name], a friendly reminder that invoice #[number] for $[amount] is due on [date]. Here's the link: [link]. Thank you!
After it's due

A simple reminder schedule
More emails isn't better. Too many and your customer starts ignoring them. A short schedule works:
- A few days before the due date: a friendly heads-up
- A few days after: a clear past-due note (or a warning before the late fee)
- Two weeks after: a final notice, or a phone call
Make paying easy
Offer more than one way to pay, like card and bank transfer. Every extra step ("mail a check", "call me for my details") gives them a reason to wait.
If a client is struggling
If a good client is having a hard month, it's fine to offer to split the bill into two or three smaller invoices with their own due dates. Agree on it in writing.
What to avoid
- Apologizing for asking. You're not bothering anyone.
- Vague amounts or dates. "Whenever you get a chance" means later.
- Threats or angry wording. Firm and clear works better.
- Making them hunt for how to pay. Always include the link.
How Dunn helps
Dunn does the asking for you, so you never write the awkward email. It sends your invoice in your name, then one friendly reminder 4 days before the due date. If the invoice goes late, Dunn sends a clear notice, adds the late fee you agreed on (after a heads-up to you), and at 14 days asks you whether to send a final notice. Every email names the invoice, the amount, and the date, and has a pay button for card or bank. Dunn keeps it to a few emails on purpose, so your customers never feel nagged. When your customer pays, the reminders stop on their own and Stripe emails them a receipt.
Quick answers
Is it OK to ask for payment upfront?
Yes, especially for new clients or big jobs. A deposit is common.
Should I text or email?
Email gives you a record. A text pointing to the email is fine too.
How soon after the job can I ask?
Right away. The same day is best.
Can I stop writing these emails myself?
Yes. Dunn sends the invoice and the follow-ups for you, in your name.
